SHORELINE, Wash. — The film “Cars 2″ has cruised to the top of the box office, and one of its stars is Ballard’s own Sig Hansen.

The “Deadliest Catch” crab boat captain has reeled in another career catch. In the film, Hansen plays a boat named Crabby that transports a secret agent to a rendezvous point out in the middle of the ocean. ”That’s the name they came up with,” he said. “And it’s sticking, because (I’m) being called crabby all over the place. I guess it suits me.” The animated vessel replicates the one Hansen inherited from his father, whose initials adorn the bow.

“Dad would have been proud,” said Hansen. “He’d have teased us, but he’d have been proud. Just wish he could have been part of it.”

Instead of walking the plank, Hansen’s been busy walking the red carpet for his film’s premiere. Fame has opened a lot of doors for this fisherman. From book deals to video games, Hansen has already seen more success than even he expected. ”I mean, I have a line of fish sticks and tarter sauce, and beer!” he said. But there is one opportunity Hansen says he’d like to snag — a spot on “Dancing with the Stars.” He watches the show regularly with his wife.

“If ABC decides to have me on there, I don’t think I’ll say no. I’ll do it,” he said. But if he’s asked to be on the show, he may not make it far. Hansen admits he’s no Gene Kelly. ”I’m a terrible dancer,” he said. And he’s not willing to completely forgo fishing for the foxtrot. When you’re hot, you’re hot. And this crabber plans to ride the wave. Hansen is also looking into buying a restaurant, creating spin-offs to his TV show and getting back in his boat.

He says fame has made him realize that fishing, above all else, is what he loves most.

Sig Hansesn: I’m a little out of my league.

TE: How long have you been in town?

Sig: I just came in for the day. With the notoriety that’s been created, it’s crazy you know. I went fishing in March. I went to Europe, did a tour for Discovery there. I’ve been everywhere. It’s just been non-stop. Had a book that came out, hit New York Times bestseller list, all the PR for that. All the other stuff we’ve done on the side: Beer, fish sticks, fucking tartar, you name it. It’s really adding up and I’m fine.

TE: How do you have time to do all of that and still go on the boat? Do you even want to go on the boat anymore?

Sig: I’d love to go on a boat. That’s the thing, once you get on the boat you get to clear your mind of all the other stuff. Like the game, it’s fun to do, it’s time consuming but at the same time – once in a lifetime deal. Right? Fuck it. Once you get on the boat, that’s where you’re so focused and in tune with what you’re doing, nothing else matters. It’s always been like that, but it’s always fun to go out there and just now I get to be who I am.

TE: So is going back a vacation – getting away from all this stuff?

Sig: Going back is reality. That’s reality. This is – it’s a lot of fun, but it’s not my reality. It’s a perk. And if it makes money, great, and if it doesn’t, I have my business. That’s my reality.

TE: Did you ever think at any point that you’d be making videogames and writing books and doing press tours? New York Times bestseller list?

Sig: The show’s been going six years. I’d say four years ago, I put my head to it and thought “You know what, there’s so much opportunity.” And as a fisherman, we’re always opportunists. I thought, “[This] can’t be that hard.” We should have a fish stick line, that just makes perfect sense. I get called to do a mattress commercial: Fuck off, I don’t sleep, why would I do a mattress commercial?

“I thought that was nice and neat the way she did it, because it’s true for all the guys. You go to work, do your thing, come home, and you go nuts. They’re not a bunch of angels up there.” But Harris was also known for his generous spirit and big heart, and Hansen has taken an interest in the future of his sons, especially the youngest, Jake.

The boats have encountered low crab numbers creating even more tension among the crew. When the fleet wakes up to ominous red dawn skies, the captains speculate that a severe storm is on the way. But with crab quota to catch, the boats keep fishing. The Time Bandit hits pay dirt, while the Cornelia Marie strikes out. Matt Bradley the deckhand from the F/V Northwestern took some time with us to chat about his life as a deckhand and being a star in the new Alaskan Storm video game. He also gives his insights on what it is like to be a fisherman that turned TV Star.

This has been a long time coming and almost was during the Crab season but circumstances forced that to be delayed.

As a Rutgers College undergraduate, I remember trolling for jobs through the student newspaper, The Daily Targum. The classifieds were a popular destination, and among the apartments for rent, band members needed, and coupons for happy hours, one advertisement always stood out: “Earn $5-10k this summer crabbing in Alaska”. I contemplated pursuing that exotic adventure, but my courage bowed to more practical obligations such as graduating on time or working additional hours at my current part-time job for extra bucks.

Flash forward several years to those Red Lobster commercials urging viewers to taste its succulent king crabs. The hearty white chunks of crabmeat bursting from those crimson shells were Alaska’s version of seafood’s Holy Grail. When the actors dipped those chunks in butter and sprinkled them with lemon juice, I, like many were sold: “Come on, let’s go to Red Lobster.”

Brothers Sig and Edgar Hansen have been Alaskan crab fishermen for most of their lives. It’s only recently that they’ve become celebrities — featured players on the Discovery Channel reality hit “Deadliest Catch,” which begins its third season at 9 tonight. The skipper and deck boss of the Northwestern came to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center last month to speak and sign autographs at the International Boston Seafood Show. Between cigarette breaks, they joined us for a chat.

At 39, Sig Hansen is captain of the Northwestern, one of the most successful crab boats fishing the perilous Bering Sea. It is regarded as one of the world’s deadliest jobs; over 50 men are lost from the fleet every year. Hansen lives in Seattle with his wife, June, and two children, Nina, 14, and Mandy, 10

There’s no daily shower on board because of the limited water supply, so you basically live in the same underwear for as long as you’re out there. After a while, you don’t even notice the smell.

I make sure the crew gets a decent breakfast on the first day. Those guys are going to be doing serious physical work for maybe a week or two — they deserve to live like kings once in a while. We might have omelette and eggs benedict, meat and potatoes, maybe some left-over goulash. This is probably the last time we’re all going to sit down and relax together for a while, so I also like to do a pep talk and get the guys psyched up.
