“The outdoor community lost a great friend Thursday. Hamilton County Sessions Court Judge Bob Moon passed away of an apparent heart attack at the age of 60. Besides sitting on the judicial bench, Judge Moon was an avid and skilled outdoorsman. When he wasn’t on the bench, he was likely perched in a deer stand or plying the waters of the Gulf with good friends like Dr. James Eyssen.” You can read the entire article over at nooga.com

A fourth-generation fisherman, Capt. Sig Hansen thought he’d spend most of his life at sea, particularly in the Bering Sea off Alaska. Little did he know that fate — and a little Tuesday-night show called “Deadliest Catch” on Discovery Channel — would eventually land him at a post-premiere party, right behind one of his favorite athletes.

“David Beckham was in there,” he says, calling in from Florida where he’s on a “Captains’ Tour,” with fellow “Deadliest” crab-boat captains Andy and Johnathan Hillstrand. “I was right behind him, but I didn’t want to bother him. I was thinking, ‘Man, I wish I could just grab him and get a picture,’ but I chickened out.”

The premiere in question was for Disney/Pixar’s new animated movie “Cars 2,”released to theaters on June 24. Hansen voices the character of Crabby the Boat, a cartoon version of his own boat, the blue-and-white F/V Northwestern.

Crabby has the job of transporting sports car Finn McMissile (voice by Michael Caine), a British master spy.

According to Hansen, he was at a fundraiser in the wine country of Sonoma County, Calif., where he met “Cars 2″ co-director John Lasseter, the chief creative officer at Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, who also shares story credit with co-director Brad Lewis andDan Fogelman.

“One thing led to another,” says Hansen. “They said, ‘Hey, we need a boat.’ ‘I have a boat.’ ‘Let’s do it.’ It was really kind of casual. It was nothing we pitched. It just sort of fell in my lap.

“it’s super, man. I love it. Come on, I got to spend time with John Lasseter; my boat is going to be forever immortalized as a Disney character. It’s not like you made any big bucks with the deal, but you were still putting yourself out there and having fun with it. I loved it. I thought it was great.”

Touring with the Hillstrands and attending movie premieres is a nice change of pace for Hansen after a winter opilio-crab season last January that saw some of the fiercest storms and biggest seas of his career, including a 35-foot-wave that slammed into the Northwestern’s wheelhouse.

Hansen also had some family storms to deal with, as younger brother, deck boss Edgar Hansen, worked the king crab season in the fall but didn’t return for opilio season.

The issue came up during the June 14 season premiere of “After the Catch,” the roundtable companion show to “Deadliest Catch.”

After some back-and-forth between the brothers, Edgar Hansen suggested that he be allowed to run the Northwestern during the 2012 opilio season. That didn’t sit too well with Sig.

“That’s the big question, isn’t it?” says Hansen. “You know what, he threw me under the bus. Number one, he’s the one that wants to stay home with his family; he wants to do all this remodeling work.

“Then, all of a sudden, you’re looking for my job? That’s my income. I still make my money on the boat.”

After all, Hansen has had to pay for deckhand Nick Mavar’s nose, broken by a flying pick hook during opilio season, which fans saw in last week’s episode of “Deadliest Catch.”

“I haven’t had the final bill,” says Hansen, “but I’m thinking that’s about a $50,000 nose. So I told him, let’s get you a George Clooney or a Brad Pitt nose, but he’s still got kind of a Croatian nose on him. It’s just nice and straight.”

Hansen also feels his younger brother’s pride has kept Edgar from spending as much time in the wheelhouse, learning how to run the ship, as other deckhands have done.

“Nick is always the one who’s up in the wheelhouse,” Hansen says, “or Jake [Anderson], more often. But Edgar doesn’t want to do that, for whatever reason.”

With his “Cars 2″ adventure, Hansen proves that a veteran fisherman can still learn some new tricks.

“I heard that my voice had a 90-percentile recognizable,” he says, “so I think that’s a good thing. I heard that through the grapevine. But, as far as doing it, I had to learn as I went, right? Not that I learned that much, but I did what they asked me to do. That’s the only way you can learn, right?

“so, if I can take my pride and listen to a guy like John Lasseter — who I now understand is a pretty big deal — and I can learn from that, why then can’t Edgar learn from his older brother?

“There were a couple of times where they said, ‘Get mad,’ and I thought, ‘How do I get mad?’ So I thought of my brother, and I got mad. That was easy.”

We received this today from our folks at Discovery regarding the issue of Embeds and Deadliest Catch Fan Sites.

There have been some recent questions about the use of Deadliest Catch content on non-Discovery websites. Discovery Channel’s policy of allowing fan sites to use embeddable videos has not changed. We value and appreciate our online fans, and are always open to sharing clips with sites that feature Deadliest Catch and our other programming. Our policy does not, however, permit the use of confusingly similar domain names that infringe on our trademarks. This also extends to the use of photographs that are subject to license limitations designed to protect our talent and our brands. We are as committed as ever to our partnerships with our fan sites, and look forward to continuing to work with you and your content needs.

For those that don’t know even we can’t use “Deadliest Catch” in our branding, clothing and/or advertising for Northwestern stuff. While we do use the logo when referring to that #1 cable show Deadliest Catch on Discovery Channel that is the extent. This is also why we avoid editing DC Clips for youtube and using screen captures from the show.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Coast Guard rescue crews from Air Station Kodiak have recovered four fishermen at 8:39 p.m. 50 miles south of Montegue Island after the 75-foot Seattle-based fishing vessel Northern Belle sank Tuesday around 5:30 p.m.

Three of the four fishermen were reported to be suffering from hypothermia and a fourth was unresponsive but receiving CPR. It was reported the four fishermen were wearing survival gear when hoisted into the helicopter.

The MH-60 helicopter crew transferred the fishermen to awaiting emergency medical personnel in Cordova for further medical treatment at 9:20 p.m.

Coast Guard Communications Station Kodiak received the distress call on HF-FM radio around 5:30 p.m. from a crewmember reporting four people were on board and they were sinking and abandoning ship. The call was forwarded to the 17th District Command Center in Juneau.

The command center directed Air Station Kodiak to launch a MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter and a HC-130 Hercules aircraft at 5:40 p.m. The Cutter Long Island, which was 40 miles northwest of the Northern Belle, was also diverted to the area and should arrive on scene shortly after 8:30 p.m.

A federal appeals court ruled Friday that the Bush administration did not properly study the environmental impact of expanding oil and gas drilling off the Alaska coast and canceled a program to find new reserves.

The ruling came on a lawsuit brought by three environmental groups that want to protect the ecosystem and the Native Village of Point Hope, a tribe that lives off the wildlife on the Chukchi Sea coast. The seas are home to wildlife including polar bears, whales, seals, walruses and seabirds.

A three-judge panel in Washington found that the Bush-era Interior Department failed to consider the effect on the environment and marine life before it began the process in August 2005 to expand an oil and gas leasing program in the Beaufort, Bering, and Chukchi seas…

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Coast Guard says a fish processing boat with 11 crew members on board is missing off Alaska’s Aleutian Islands.

The agency received a distress signal just after 1 a.m. Wednesday from the 93-foot boat Katmai, which is home-ported in Seattle.

The military says all that searchers had found by noon Wednesday were two empty survival suits, a partially deflated life raft, and the emergency beacon registered to the Katmai. There were no signs of the boat or crew members.

The Katmai is owned by Katmai Fisheries Inc., based in Ballard, a company official told KOMO 4 News. The boat is based in Kodiak during the fishing season.

The Coast Guard said weather conditions were 35 mph winds with 10-15 foot seas and a rain/snow mix, limiting visibility to three miles.

The Katmai was headed toward an island in the Aleutian chain with a load of cod. The company says the crew is from all over the Northwest.

The Band Buckcherry has taken delevery of their new $1,000,000 tour bus. What some people may not know is that most band buses, like boats get named as they get built and start to take on a personality. This bus which was custom built for the band is Corvette Blue & Escalade Pearl White, the interior has a lot of hard wood, granite and Ostrich skin. The New Bus has been named NORTHWESTERN after the ship on the design teams favorite show. Don’t worry Time Bandit there will be one for you soon.
