Coming from a long line of Norwegian fisherman, Sig Hansen began fishing at the age of 14, assisting his father developing the King Crab industry in Alaska. While in high school, he served as a deckhand on a salmon gillnetter and worked with his father in the crab fisheries. At the age of 22, he began serving as a relief captain on the family boat, the Northwestern. At 26 he became one of the youngest ever to become a full-time captain. In the nearly two decades since taking over the family ship, Hansen has managed to avoid any major accidents while ensuring that the Northwestern is one of Alaska’s top crab producers. Hansen and the Northwestern crew recently completed the eighth season of the Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch.Club.
