“The outdoor community lost a great friend Thursday. Hamilton County Sessions Court Judge Bob Moon passed away of an apparent heart attack at the age of 60. Besides sitting on the judicial bench, Judge Moon was an avid and skilled outdoorsman. When he wasn’t on the bench, he was likely perched in a deer stand or plying the waters of the Gulf with good friends like Dr. James Eyssen.” You can read the entire article over at nooga.com

I live in the UK though, so unfortunately I don’t think I will ever get the chance to meet any of you, but know that all your fans here pray for your safety every year as well. I have written a little something, which is dedicated to each and every one of the men who have ever appeared on the show, and those who haven’t, but still do the job. I don’t profess to being a literary genius, it’s more a hobby. Nevertheless I hope that you like it. Thank you again for taking the time to read this.

Stay Safe, With love from the UK
Ceri Fitzgerald xx

We’re Just Fishermen
A few years ago I watched a show.
It’s one I’m sure that a lot of you know.
It’s called Deadliest Catch, but between you and me,

We like to call it DC.
So what’s it about, I hear you ask?
To tell you, well, it’s no easy task.
It tells the stories of some very brave men,

But they say “We’re just fishermen”
They fish for crabs, King’s & Snow,
How they do it, I’ll never know.
In a place that is brutal, harsh and free.

It’s name is The Bering Sea.
They make us laugh, they make us cry.
Sometimes I often wonder why?
It’s a bunch of men I’ve never met,

I live in hope I may do yet.
The pranks they pull, the jokes they tell,
Is it true, that crab farts smell?!
We feel the pain of every man,

You’re in the hearts of every fan.
We hope that you stay safe and sound,
Until you make it back to solid ground.
For your grief and sorrow, we share with you.

Even though you never asked us to.
When I thought of all the jobs out there,
I was so naïve, I didn’t care,
Fishing is hard, and hard as hell,

But it’s shocking to know people die as well.
So next time you eat crab, remember them,
A bunch of Sea hardy Fishermen.
For while we enjoy the stories they tell,

Only they will truly know the Bering Sea Hell.

SHORELINE, Wash. — The film “Cars 2″ has cruised to the top of the box office, and one of its stars is Ballard’s own Sig Hansen.

The “Deadliest Catch” crab boat captain has reeled in another career catch. In the film, Hansen plays a boat named Crabby that transports a secret agent to a rendezvous point out in the middle of the ocean. ”That’s the name they came up with,” he said. “And it’s sticking, because (I’m) being called crabby all over the place. I guess it suits me.” The animated vessel replicates the one Hansen inherited from his father, whose initials adorn the bow.

“Dad would have been proud,” said Hansen. “He’d have teased us, but he’d have been proud. Just wish he could have been part of it.”

Instead of walking the plank, Hansen’s been busy walking the red carpet for his film’s premiere. Fame has opened a lot of doors for this fisherman. From book deals to video games, Hansen has already seen more success than even he expected. ”I mean, I have a line of fish sticks and tarter sauce, and beer!” he said. But there is one opportunity Hansen says he’d like to snag — a spot on “Dancing with the Stars.” He watches the show regularly with his wife.

“If ABC decides to have me on there, I don’t think I’ll say no. I’ll do it,” he said. But if he’s asked to be on the show, he may not make it far. Hansen admits he’s no Gene Kelly. ”I’m a terrible dancer,” he said. And he’s not willing to completely forgo fishing for the foxtrot. When you’re hot, you’re hot. And this crabber plans to ride the wave. Hansen is also looking into buying a restaurant, creating spin-offs to his TV show and getting back in his boat.

He says fame has made him realize that fishing, above all else, is what he loves most.

A fourth-generation fisherman, Capt. Sig Hansen thought he’d spend most of his life at sea, particularly in the Bering Sea off Alaska. Little did he know that fate — and a little Tuesday-night show called “Deadliest Catch” on Discovery Channel — would eventually land him at a post-premiere party, right behind one of his favorite athletes.

“David Beckham was in there,” he says, calling in from Florida where he’s on a “Captains’ Tour,” with fellow “Deadliest” crab-boat captains Andy and Johnathan Hillstrand. “I was right behind him, but I didn’t want to bother him. I was thinking, ‘Man, I wish I could just grab him and get a picture,’ but I chickened out.”

The premiere in question was for Disney/Pixar’s new animated movie “Cars 2,”released to theaters on June 24. Hansen voices the character of Crabby the Boat, a cartoon version of his own boat, the blue-and-white F/V Northwestern.

Crabby has the job of transporting sports car Finn McMissile (voice by Michael Caine), a British master spy.

According to Hansen, he was at a fundraiser in the wine country of Sonoma County, Calif., where he met “Cars 2″ co-director John Lasseter, the chief creative officer at Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, who also shares story credit with co-director Brad Lewis andDan Fogelman.

“One thing led to another,” says Hansen. “They said, ‘Hey, we need a boat.’ ‘I have a boat.’ ‘Let’s do it.’ It was really kind of casual. It was nothing we pitched. It just sort of fell in my lap.

“it’s super, man. I love it. Come on, I got to spend time with John Lasseter; my boat is going to be forever immortalized as a Disney character. It’s not like you made any big bucks with the deal, but you were still putting yourself out there and having fun with it. I loved it. I thought it was great.”

Touring with the Hillstrands and attending movie premieres is a nice change of pace for Hansen after a winter opilio-crab season last January that saw some of the fiercest storms and biggest seas of his career, including a 35-foot-wave that slammed into the Northwestern’s wheelhouse.

Hansen also had some family storms to deal with, as younger brother, deck boss Edgar Hansen, worked the king crab season in the fall but didn’t return for opilio season.

The issue came up during the June 14 season premiere of “After the Catch,” the roundtable companion show to “Deadliest Catch.”

After some back-and-forth between the brothers, Edgar Hansen suggested that he be allowed to run the Northwestern during the 2012 opilio season. That didn’t sit too well with Sig.

“That’s the big question, isn’t it?” says Hansen. “You know what, he threw me under the bus. Number one, he’s the one that wants to stay home with his family; he wants to do all this remodeling work.

“Then, all of a sudden, you’re looking for my job? That’s my income. I still make my money on the boat.”

After all, Hansen has had to pay for deckhand Nick Mavar’s nose, broken by a flying pick hook during opilio season, which fans saw in last week’s episode of “Deadliest Catch.”

“I haven’t had the final bill,” says Hansen, “but I’m thinking that’s about a $50,000 nose. So I told him, let’s get you a George Clooney or a Brad Pitt nose, but he’s still got kind of a Croatian nose on him. It’s just nice and straight.”

Hansen also feels his younger brother’s pride has kept Edgar from spending as much time in the wheelhouse, learning how to run the ship, as other deckhands have done.

“Nick is always the one who’s up in the wheelhouse,” Hansen says, “or Jake [Anderson], more often. But Edgar doesn’t want to do that, for whatever reason.”

With his “Cars 2″ adventure, Hansen proves that a veteran fisherman can still learn some new tricks.

“I heard that my voice had a 90-percentile recognizable,” he says, “so I think that’s a good thing. I heard that through the grapevine. But, as far as doing it, I had to learn as I went, right? Not that I learned that much, but I did what they asked me to do. That’s the only way you can learn, right?

“so, if I can take my pride and listen to a guy like John Lasseter — who I now understand is a pretty big deal — and I can learn from that, why then can’t Edgar learn from his older brother?

“There were a couple of times where they said, ‘Get mad,’ and I thought, ‘How do I get mad?’ So I thought of my brother, and I got mad. That was easy.”

Sandy & Patty a couple of Northwestern Fans had such an awesome experience last August being able to Chat and Drink with Sig and closing out the Lounge at Lake of the Torches Casino, they sent in their new plan for another meet and greet for 2011. If you have a garage and extra stuff this post is for you.

We’ve had some creative methods for meeting Sig and some not so legal methods for trying to meet him. We’ve also done our fair share of Northwestern Charity events raising money over the years for Ronald McDonald House, Make a Wish Foundation and friends of the northwestern charity events for medical issues and local school issues.

However, this is the first time we’ve seen someone do an event to raise money to see Sig Hansen. It strikes a chord as “wow that’s odd” at first. Then you think wow they are on to something here. So I got to thinking why not have a “Friends of the Northwestern Garage Sale Post” if you have a garage sale to benefit you raising money to see Sig at an event or even the Captain’s Tour then will we post your Garage Sale information as well as Dates and Times. So long you send a photo of your setup with your “A Northwestern’s Deadliest Garage Sale” banner or signage. Heck for the effort I may even mail you some Northwestern Gear but that depends on your creativeness.

So who started this grand idea? We’ll they are right here Sandy & Partty and their story. I am hoping they put together a “How to have a Deadliest Garage Sale” handbook.

We are such fans of the NORTHWESTERN, the crew, the show and of course our beloved SIG! After our wonderful time (we still do not know how it all happened) we spent with Capt. Sig
on his last visit to this casino we learned first hand what a TOP NOTCH person Sig is. He treated us like friends, and we will never forget it. We actually stood in line for 3 hours in 89 degree heat (a few cold beers DID help) so we could get our picture taken with him. Only to find out, by the time we got up there…there was no time left to get a picture with him. Only a quick HOWDY DO and you were told to get out of the way! WE WERE DEVESTATED!!! WE traveled far and waited so long to get a picture with him. We were close to tears. But understood that there were SO many people waiting to meet him they had no choice in the matter. BUT……

We got LUCKY…and I mean REALLY LUCKY and not CASINO lucky! At the end of the night and all our gambling money was gone we decided to pop in the lounge for a coke to take to the room and there he was!!! WE WERE IN AWE!
We got to tell him how we spent so much time in a line waiting to meet him and get a picture and then were told we could NOT get one. He could not believe it! He was MORE THAN THRILLED to let us take a picture with him and spend some time chatting with us one on one!

WE NEVER forgot this moment in time…where we got to talk face to face with our “buddy”. We even use THOSE pictures he let us take as our profile picture on Facebook. We were also now CELEBS in our own right after we got home and showed our pictures of our new found BUDDY to all our friends. It could not have worked out more perfectly!!

SO THEN….we hear that SIG is returning to the Lake of the Torches AGAIN this August with the Hillstrand brothers in tow! Well, we flipped! We had to figure out a way to get back there to see him again and hope that we could once again spend a little time talking to our friend.
Well, you seen the results of that! We got involved in our community wide Garage Sale so we could raise the money needed for such an expensive trip. AND WE DID, well maybe not all of it, but we are darn close!

We both know he most likely will not remember who we are…but you can bet, we know who HE is and remember how kind-hearted, gracious and down to earth he was to us girls. He treated us like we were friends our whole lives and gave us a memory we talk about to this day. WE LOVE SIG and are thrilled to have made enough money in our garage sale to take the 3 hour drive to try and see him again. We know we might not be able to get as “LUCKY” as we did last year at the casino…but we sure are praying to the NORTHWESTERN GOD that it WILL HAPPEN AGAIN!

Thanks to all of you for recognizing that fans are pretty awesome too! We are thrilled you picked us to be on your FRONT PAGE of the Northerstern Web site. IN fact…we are pretty much GIDDY!

We wish you ALL the best and lots of CRAB FILLED POTS!!!

Sincerely and most thankful,

Sandy Monville and Patty Ollila

Where will the boat be in June. I’m enclosing a copy of our story and project.

Latest New story link: http://www.ultimatemotorcycling.com/2011/quadriplegic-to-alaska-via-motorcycle

My name is Danny Miller and I’m a quadriplegic, but I’m not the typical person you think of when you see a chair. I’m filming a documentary on my trip to Alaska to help raise awareness for handicapped people. I will be driving a special modified adaptive motorcycle from my home in Murrieta CA all the way to Kodiak Alaska. This will be over 6 thousand miles on a bike and to my knowledge, the first time a quadriplegic has ever attempted such a trip. I’ll be bringing a camera crew along to video the entire journey and I’m asking for any form of support or sponsorship for this very costly project. A night in a hotel or lodge, fuel card, activity cash or anything you could provide would help. An activity or adventure would be the most help so that we can show that everything is possible. I’m paying for this project entirely myself and could really use any support you can provide. I’m in a manual chair and do not require anything special. I can do anything as normal, just a little slower. If you operate a lodge, hotel, business, Tour Company, or any sort of activity you could gain exposure by people seeing your location & event in magazines and film. In return, I will promote your company in the movie, magazines, news articles, Facebook and your company logo on the bikes. We are doing a press photo shoot on June 19. I will also provide you a copy of the finished movie. This movie will be shown as an independent film being viewed at theaters, hospitals and online. We just received an offer the preview the movie in New York at the film festival. I will be also sending hospitals that deal with spinal cord injury a free copy of the movie so that others could see that if I can do this, they also can live a normal and fun life. We’re in the process of negotiating a possible showing on a major network. I’m also contacting all news media and the governors of the states that I’ll be passing thru. My goal is to show this movie around the country to show people that even if you’re in a wheel chair that there is still life out there. I’m leaving Murrieta on this June 20th and plan on taking 6 weeks to complete the journey. There will be 3 motorcycles and a support vehicle traveling, 8 people total. If someone you know has suffered a spinal cord injury and might need a little motivation or inspiration I would be happy to assist in any way. So many people helped me to make my life better this is my way of giving back and hopefully help someone else. If you’re not able to help, please pass this on to others. I’m enclosing a copy of my story.

Thank you in advance and God Bless.

If you have any questions, or would like any information on how to help. Any donations can be sent to:

Most people have a time in their lives they remember as a life changing experience. For some it might be getting married, or having a child born. Mine took place on September 20, 2004. On this day seven of my friends and I were involved in a car accident that had the vehicle we were in roll over across the freeway and down a 280 foot embankment. Most everyone walked away from it with cuts and bruises. I did not walk away and was told that I would never walk again; I was a quadriplegic. I do not recall the event of the accident, and after about a week of being in a coma from a head injury that caused my brain to bleed and swell, I had learned what happened and was told that I would never be able to regain functions from my neck down. I also had a crushed right hand, a broken right scapula, and bruised lungs that were taking on liquid and causing me to drown. While in the hospital, I was surviving with a respirator and stomach tube. Unable to talk, eat, drink, or move; like many I assume in a similar situation, I was saddened and discouraged that someone would have to look after me for the rest of my life. I felt that my life was over. This disheartening news would later be a fact that I would ignore as well as prove wrong to the doctors and myself. My name is Danny Miller and this is my story of how I fought against all odds, and showed that nothing is for certain.

At the time of the accident I had just turned twenty-four years old, still a young man by standards with my whole life ahead of me. As a healthy young man, I was arrogant and proud, active in all types of thrills and adventures. I enjoyed anything that challenged, and scared me. I partook in such things as paintball, dirt bike riding, snowboarding, wake boarding, scuba diving, and rock climbing. As well as staying busy with adventures, I also worked full time at the family Paintball Park, and was attending college full time in order to earn my degree in criminal justice. My boy hood dream was to be a FBI agent. I wanted to be the man you read about or see in movies that ended some political regimes plan to take over the world, or stop some cataclysmic event that would kill hundreds of people. I knew that what I saw in movies was fiction, but a boy could dream.

Many might say that I lived my life as if there was no tomorrow, and maybe I did, but I made each day count, and as I was told by my father a combat wounded US Marine Gunnery Sergeant “that life is measured by the risks you take and the strides you make.” As I look back, perhaps my arrogant and proud attitude was my down fall, and my injuries was a hard sit down about life, however, I believe that my arrogant, and proud attitude were the reasons for the next events to take place. As an active young man, I was at a low point in my life when the doctors told me that I would not be able to live my life as I did and that I would need someone to care for me. They told me that I would never move anything from the neck down. I would be a twenty-four year old infant. As I saw it, my life was over. However, my family and friends did not see it that way and believed that I had the strength and fortitude to stand up to this challenge and beat it back, just as I did when I was challenged or scared by an adventure. With much debate and tears, I finally agreed with them and fought to be a man again, perhaps even the man I was. We found this place, called Project Walk, which is a spinal cord recovery center. Their knowledge, and positive attitude helped me to get better, and see that there is hope. It took some time and a lot of hard work, but after about a year after the accident I regained movement in my arms and left hand as well as being able to stand and take some assisted steps with a walker. Since then I continue to work out at Project Walk. Although it is challenge and a struggle to continue living life as I did, I still hold fast to my sense of adventure and continue to partake in many of my old activities, just with some adaptations to them.

Throughout the years, I have met other people in wheelchairs. Many with my same level of injury, and some had no movement from the shoulders down. They listened to what the doctor had told them, and gave up on life. It is sad fact that in today’s age of technological advances and breakthroughs, that someone is told that they will never be able to walk again, and that person’s dreams and ambitions are destroyed in an instance.

I want to show others that are disabled in anyway, that there is life after, perhaps an even better one. I want to prove to the doctors and therapist that there is hope and recovery, and anyone can get better if they work at it. In June, I will embark on journey where I will ride an adapted motorcycle from southern California to Alaska. The adventure will be documented to show that even if someone lives their life in a wheelchair, they can still live a full life, and that there is no such thing as handi-capped, but there is handi-capable.

Being physically disabled, I have learned a lot. I have learned to be patient; I have learned failure and success, taking the first step, and how to better view people. My life is challenged everyday now even with the once simple tasks of tying my shoes, but I hold fast to my strength, and I am ambitious to see what the future has in store for me. I see myself as a stronger person, a man at the age of twenty-nine that views life at a different height, and will roll through life with a stronger concept of family, friends, compassion, and the persistence to improve my life, as well as others each step of the way.

I’ve been watching the Deadliest Catch marathon most of the day today. I’m always on my FB page doing one thing or another and decided to look up Captain John. Then I looked up your page and posted a comment…then I saw you had an email address posted, so here I am! Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy the show and have been a fan since season one. I was so sad when Captain Phil passed away ~ I’m in the medical field, (rehab) and I know all too well how devastating strokes can be. I so enjoyed watching Phil and the crusty but loving relationship he had with Josh and Jake. I know they will miss him forever and that makes me sad. I know you loved him too and believe it or not, many fans grieve his passing too. The show isn’t the same without him so I can imagine how different it must be for you and all the guys. You, Phil, and John have always been my favorite captains to watch on the show. I think you’re an amazing fisherman….maybe it’s the creative editing of the show, but you always seem to get tons of crab (and I love crab)! The Northwestern is an impressive boat to be sure. I used to go Halibut fishing a lot when I lived in Los Angeles and I miss it. It was always fun to be on the sea, but I wouldn’t last two hours on a crab boat (sissy for sure). I hope you and the Northwestern are around for many more seasons and if you ever do a meet-and-greet in Northern California, I’d love to say hi in person. – Dorinda

I saw this on the web:

I fish a place like no other place on Earth you will ever find.

A place where the hard work, danger and nature should reflect a man’s worth.

I fish a place where the hours are long and sleep is the rarest of all.

A place where even the strong stumble and fall.

I fish countless hours, pulling countless pots.

A place where the memories of her back home bring on countless thoughts.

I fish a place where the weather can turn in the blink of an eye.

A place where some will get hurt and some will die.

I love this place and the pride given me.

You see, very few people on the face of this Earth can say they have fished the Bering Sea.

Stay safe Skipper,

Dorinda

For some it’s a season of change; for others, a chance to make a name for themselves, but some things remain constant: the perilous, icy waters of the Bering Sea and most dangerous job in the world. After a record breaking, heartbreaking season last year, the Emmy award-winning DEADLIEST CATCH returns to Discovery Channel, Tuesday, April 12 at 9 pm ET/PT.
All the captains are back to do what they do best: fish for crab, with a one hundred million dollar reward on the line. But, this season, one challenge after another seems to rock each boat to its core. In the end, all the captains will come to the realization that the most violent storms come from within.
In the New Season, the dark clouds and long shadow of their father’s death still hang heavy on sons Josh and Jake Harris but now they need to show the rest of the fleet that they can come back and step it up as co-owners of the Cornelia Marie.
After briefly auditioning successors in the wheelhouse of the Time Bandit last season, Andy and Johnathan Hillstrand are center stage again with no intention of stepping down but they soon find their lucky streak in crabbing could be coming to an end.
Over on the Northwestern, Captain Sig Hansen is still left guessing if his brother Edgar is committed to sticking with the family business. And the usually steady and reliable, Captain Keith Colburn gambles and ventures into uncharted fishing grounds hoping for a big payoff for the Wizard.
Two new boats join the fleet this season. Dubbed “the floating frat house,” the Ramblin’ Rose introduces a young, rowdy crew skippered by Elliot Neese, all of 28 years old, and already boasting about his fishing prowess. Seabrooke Captain Scott Campbell Jr., 36, adds youth and cockiness as well but behind the steely confidence, Junior is still haunted by the loss of a deckhand at sea. Can he battle back and conquer his demons?

With the help from my dad Ibought us two tickets for his birthday to go see Sig. It was better than I ever could have expected. Sig was just so fun and real with the audience. He even received phone calls from Jon Hilstrand and Edgar Hansen and put the phone up to the mic so we could all hear them. When questions were being asked from the audience I had two questions in mind. I was so excited when called upon. My first question was “Do you like my shirt?” (I was wearing a Captain Phil t-shirt) and my second question was “Will you sign my poster?” Sig wasn’t sure if he was allowed to but the moderator said he could and Sig was kind enough to say yes. They invited me on stage and Sig signed my poster. It was certaintly a night I will never forget and I thank you for that Sig.

Not that it would have been a bad thing. Here’s a tidbit from Valerie below.

This post, along with it’s Jupiter-sized cookies, is dedicated to crew of the F/V Northwestern…and to anyone who may know them. Am I above using chocolate chip cookies as bargaining tools to draw in new visitors? Not at all. And trust me, these are the the best kind of bargaining chips you can find. Instead of breaking teeth, these will only leave a massive crack in any potential diet plans to wear a bikini this summer.

Colossal Chocolate Chip Cookies

Allow me to butter you up first by describing the cookies. As you can see, they are massive. Thanks to that buxom circumference, there are large amounts of chocolate and nuts (if you so desire) in every bite. But what about that ever important element, the texture? No worries. These chocolate chip Frisbees are heart breakingly soft and chewy. Can you see how thick they are? Normally cookies this thick are too cakey. But these are magic cookies. They have a slight cakiness that is so rapidly overtaken by the gooey chunks of chocolate, you won’t even notice, or care. I also added an Une Gamine staple by substituting pure almond extract for vanilla. This, along with the density, offers an almond paste-like flavour. Undeniably addicting. If these were handed out to teenagers, they would be waving around whisks and spatulas at rave parties.

One of the featured captins on the popular Discovery Channel program, Deadliest Catch, Sig Hansen pushes his crew night and day during the peak of Alaska’s crab season on the treacherous waters of the Bering Sea. At the helm of the Northwestern, a family boat, he stays awake at the wheel for up to three days at a time – living on coffee, chocolate, and cigarettes. Known for his fierce temperament and 20-plus years of experience on the sea, Hansen will take guests on a journey through the obstacles and challenges of this death-defying trade and life as a crab fisherman.

We received this today from our folks at Discovery regarding the issue of Embeds and Deadliest Catch Fan Sites.

There have been some recent questions about the use of Deadliest Catch content on non-Discovery websites. Discovery Channel’s policy of allowing fan sites to use embeddable videos has not changed. We value and appreciate our online fans, and are always open to sharing clips with sites that feature Deadliest Catch and our other programming. Our policy does not, however, permit the use of confusingly similar domain names that infringe on our trademarks. This also extends to the use of photographs that are subject to license limitations designed to protect our talent and our brands. We are as committed as ever to our partnerships with our fan sites, and look forward to continuing to work with you and your content needs.

For those that don’t know even we can’t use “Deadliest Catch” in our branding, clothing and/or advertising for Northwestern stuff. While we do use the logo when referring to that #1 cable show Deadliest Catch on Discovery Channel that is the extent. This is also why we avoid editing DC Clips for youtube and using screen captures from the show.

CASH ONLY. Purchase tickets at the drive through window at the restaurant. Seats are LIMITED so buy your ticket as soon as possible. Seating starts at 5pm, (no saving seats). Edgar will start speaking around 6:22… – event ends at 8:30pm. Edgar will take some questions from the audience and there will be an opportunity for photographs and autographs. This is going to be GREAT fun and we are so grateful to be able to help a local fishing family in need at the same time. “Troy & Christine have put Brevard County, Florida, on the map as a premier fishing destination. People come from all over the world to fish here; spending money in our hotels, restaurants and throughout our community. We owe them a debt of gratitude,” say Laurilee Thompson, owner of Dixie Crossroads Seafood Restaurant.

But now Christine is battling the toughest fight of her life against cancer. For over 25 years Troy and Christine Perez have been fishing, hunting and surfing all over the world. They have been a huge part of our fishing community for years, helping with fishing seminars, tournaments and sharing their wealth of knowledge of fishing. Together they hold so many world records it’s to many to count. They are always together and share a deep passion for the outdoors; they are a true husband and wife team.

Edgar Hansen and Jake Anderson of the F/V Northwestern participated in the Island Aid Benefit Concert on Saturday, July 24, in Grand Isle, LA and greeted over 10,000 fans who waited in line for autographs and photos. The event raised $20,000 which will aid in rebuilding the struggling fishing and tourism industry of Grand Isle. Joining Edgar and Jake in raising money for the cause were entertainment acts such as Three Dog Night, LeAnn Rimes, Little Rover Band, Doug Kershaw and more!!

Island Aid was in lieu of the famous Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo, which was canceled this year due to the devastating gulf oil spill.

We are all deeply saddened by the passing of Capt. Phil last February. He was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him. We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart — in every way, he was a true American legend.
Phil was a star of Deadliest Catch from the series premiere in 2005, but what we all shared on TV for just a few years was only a small part of his life as a fisherman and father. He worked for 18 years as captain and co-owner of the Cornelia Marie and for 32 years in the fishing industry. The son of a fisherman, Phil is also the father of Jake and Josh Harris who both served — and learned — under him on the Cornelia Marie.

The Escapist: How you doing? This is not like fishing.

Sig Hansesn: I’m a little out of my league.

TE: How long have you been in town?

Sig: I just came in for the day. With the notoriety that’s been created, it’s crazy you know. I went fishing in March. I went to Europe, did a tour for Discovery there. I’ve been everywhere. It’s just been non-stop. Had a book that came out, hit New York Times bestseller list, all the PR for that. All the other stuff we’ve done on the side: Beer, fish sticks, fucking tartar, you name it. It’s really adding up and I’m fine.

TE: How do you have time to do all of that and still go on the boat? Do you even want to go on the boat anymore?

Sig: I’d love to go on a boat. That’s the thing, once you get on the boat you get to clear your mind of all the other stuff. Like the game, it’s fun to do, it’s time consuming but at the same time – once in a lifetime deal. Right? Fuck it. Once you get on the boat, that’s where you’re so focused and in tune with what you’re doing, nothing else matters. It’s always been like that, but it’s always fun to go out there and just now I get to be who I am.

TE: So is going back a vacation – getting away from all this stuff?

Sig: Going back is reality. That’s reality. This is – it’s a lot of fun, but it’s not my reality. It’s a perk. And if it makes money, great, and if it doesn’t, I have my business. That’s my reality.

TE: Did you ever think at any point that you’d be making videogames and writing books and doing press tours? New York Times bestseller list?

Sig: The show’s been going six years. I’d say four years ago, I put my head to it and thought “You know what, there’s so much opportunity.” And as a fisherman, we’re always opportunists. I thought, “[This] can’t be that hard.” We should have a fish stick line, that just makes perfect sense. I get called to do a mattress commercial: Fuck off, I don’t sleep, why would I do a mattress commercial?

Captain Sig Hansen Will be Special Guest at Lake of the Torches Casino.

Sig Hansen, the star captain on the Discovery Channel’s hit television show “Deadliest Catch,” will be a featured guest at the Great Northwoods Fish Fry Fest on Saturday, August 14, at Lake of the Torches Resort Casino in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin.

(Vocus) June 23, 2010 — Sig Hansen (http://www.sighansen.net/), the star captain on the Discovery Channel’s (http://dsc.discovery.com/) hit television show “Deadliest Catch,” (http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/deadliest-catch/) will be a featured guest at the Great Northwoods Fish Fry Fest (http://www.wiupevents.com/fishfest.html) on Saturday, August 14, at Lake of the Torches Resort Casino (http://www.lakeofthetorches.com).

He will be one of several judges appearing at the fest in which restaurant owners and cooks from across the region compete to see who can claim the title “Best Fish Fry in the Northwoods.” Sig Hansen will be available for free autographs and pictures at the event on Saturday, Aug. 14, from 1pm. – 5p.m. Events will take place in the casino’s Hall of Nations convention center and in the parking lot located by the hotel. Deadliest Catch fans of all ages are welcomed to attend this free event.

Television fans know Hansen from the Discovery Channel television show “Deadliest Catch,” which documents the crab fishing fleet which battles the fierce storms and rough conditions on the Bering Sea. The name Deadliest Catch refers to the high risk of injury or death the crews face due to the hazardous work condition.

Hansen is captain of the Northwestern (http://fvnorthwestern.com/index.php), the crab fishing vessel known as one of the fleet’s top producers. The Northwestern, which Hansen has captained for the past 20 years, never has had a single death and its serious injury rate is lower than other boats in the Bering Sea Fleet. Hansen’s younger brother, Edgar, serves as Engineer and Deck Boss on the Northwestern and another brother, Norman, often serves as a deck hand.

The Hansen brothers have fishing in their blood. Their father was a Norwegian fisherman who was one of the pioneers of fishing on the Bering Sea. Sig himself learned the ropes starting at age 14 on his dad’s fishing vessel and eventually took over the helm at 24, being one of the youngest captains on the Bering Sea. He is known as a hard-driving captain who pushes himself and his crew to work grueling hours under extreme weather conditions to capture some of the biggest hauls on the fishing fleet.

“Anyone who has seen the exploits of the Northwestern crew on The Deadliest Catch knows the respect Sig Hansen deserves as one of the best captains of the Bering Sea fleet,” remarked Michael J. Broderick, Director of Marketing for Lake of the Torches. “We’re excited to bring Captain Sig to Lake of the Torches Resort Casino so that his Wisconsin fans have this unique opportunity to meet him.”

More information about the Great Northwoods Fish Fry Fest is available at www.fishingboatingoutdoor.com. Or, visit the Player Services desk at the casino for more information.

Situated on the shores of Pokegama Lake and nestled in Wisconsin’s Northwoods, the Lake of the Torches Resort Casino has a feel of a classic Northern retreat and reflects its Ojibwe culture and heritage. The casino has over 800 slot machines (including a high-limit and non-smoking area), 12 blackjack tables, Let it Ride, Three Card Poker, and three poker tables, a high-stakes Bingo Hall seating up to 500 persons, the Game Time Grill and the Eagle’s Nest Restaurant. The hotel has 101 well–appointed rooms, the Dancing Waters Lounge and the Woodland Oasis pool area. The 8,500 square-foot Convention Center with the Hall of Nations offers an outstanding venue for entertainment, receptions, trade shows, meetings, presentations and seminars. It is proudly owned and operated by the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians.
