FORT MYERS, Fla. – August 5, 2010 – Pinchers Crab Shack, renowned family-owned seafood restaurant, is hosting a block party at their new Gulf Coast Town Center location with 3 of the crewmembers from the Discovery Channel’s Northwestern: Edgar Hansen – Deck Boss, Matt Bradley – Deckhand and Jake Anderson – Junior Deckhand on Saturday, August 21^st. Excited about opening their 8^th location, Pinchers wants to celebrate with the community. The event is free, open to the public and will feature live music, a silent auction and festivities for the entire family.

Avid motorcycle riders when not fishing, all three crewmembers will be participating in a ride from Harley-Davidson of Fort Myers to Naples Harley-Davidson and ending at Pinchers Crab Shack the day of the event. Participants should arrive at Harley-Davidson of Fort Myers at 2:00 p.m., leaving at 3:00 p.m. The second leg of the ride will leave Naples Harley-Davidson at 4:45 p.m. arriving at Pinchers Crab Shack by approximately 5:30 p.m.

From 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Pinchers, guests will get to mingle with the crew, take photos and participate in a Northwestern “stories from the sea” question and answer session. The Dazzling Delrays will play from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. followed by Deb and the Dynamics from 9:00 pm. to midnight.  

Funds will be raised and split between two causes – Blessings in a Backpack and Jake Anderson’s search for his father. Blessings is a local nonprofit organization feeding area hungry children. Edgar& Jake Assist Island Aid Benefit Concert

Edgar Hansen and Jake Anderson of the F/V Northwestern participated in the Island Aid Benefit Concert on Saturday, July 24, in Grand Isle, LA and greeted over 10,000 fans who waited in line for autographs and photos.  The event raised $20,000 which will aid in rebuilding the struggling fishing and tourism industry of Grand Isle.  Joining Edgar and Jake in raising money for the cause were entertainment acts such as Three Dog Night, LeAnn Rimes, Little Rover Band, Doug Kershaw and more!!

Island Aid was in lieu of the famous Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo, which was canceled this year due to the devastating gulf oil spill.

The parade always brings out a huge crowd as it kicks off the weekend. This year MLT resident and Deadliest Catch star Edgar Hansen will Grand Marshall the parade. Plan to come early if you want to get a good spot. The parade goes north on 56th Ave W from 236th St to around 224th St. Below is a map of the parade route

Sig Hansesn: I’m a little out of my league.

TE: How long have you been in town?

Sig: I just came in for the day. With the notoriety that’s been created, it’s crazy you know. I went fishing in March. I went to Europe, did a tour for Discovery there. I’ve been everywhere. It’s just been non-stop. Had a book that came out, hit New York Times bestseller list, all the PR for that. All the other stuff we’ve done on the side: Beer, fish sticks, fucking tartar, you name it. It’s really adding up and I’m fine.

TE: How do you have time to do all of that and still go on the boat? Do you even want to go on the boat anymore?

Sig: I’d love to go on a boat. That’s the thing, once you get on the boat you get to clear your mind of all the other stuff. Like the game, it’s fun to do, it’s time consuming but at the same time – once in a lifetime deal. Right? Fuck it. Once you get on the boat, that’s where you’re so focused and in tune with what you’re doing, nothing else matters. It’s always been like that, but it’s always fun to go out there and just now I get to be who I am.

TE: So is going back a vacation – getting away from all this stuff?

Sig: Going back is reality. That’s reality. This is – it’s a lot of fun, but it’s not my reality. It’s a perk. And if it makes money, great, and if it doesn’t, I have my business. That’s my reality.

TE: Did you ever think at any point that you’d be making videogames and writing books and doing press tours? New York Times bestseller list?

Sig: The show’s been going six years. I’d say four years ago, I put my head to it and thought “You know what, there’s so much opportunity.” And as a fisherman, we’re always opportunists. I thought, “[This] can’t be that hard.” We should have a fish stick line, that just makes perfect sense. I get called to do a mattress commercial: Fuck off, I don’t sleep, why would I do a mattress commercial?

(Vocus) June 23, 2010 — Sig Hansen (http://www.sighansen.net/), the star captain on the Discovery Channel’s (http://dsc.discovery.com/) hit television show “Deadliest Catch,” (http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/deadliest-catch/) will be a featured guest at the Great Northwoods Fish Fry Fest (http://www.wiupevents.com/fishfest.html) on Saturday, August 14, at Lake of the Torches Resort Casino (http://www.lakeofthetorches.com).

He will be one of several judges appearing at the fest in which restaurant owners and cooks from across the region compete to see who can claim the title “Best Fish Fry in the Northwoods.” Sig Hansen will be available for free autographs and pictures at the event on Saturday, Aug. 14, from 1pm. – 5p.m. Events will take place in the casino’s Hall of Nations convention center and in the parking lot located by the hotel. Deadliest Catch fans of all ages are welcomed to attend this free event.

Television fans know Hansen from the Discovery Channel television show “Deadliest Catch,” which documents the crab fishing fleet which battles the fierce storms and rough conditions on the Bering Sea. The name Deadliest Catch refers to the high risk of injury or death the crews face due to the hazardous work condition.

Hansen is captain of the Northwestern (http://fvnorthwestern.com/index.php), the crab fishing vessel known as one of the fleet’s top producers. The Northwestern, which Hansen has captained for the past 20 years, never has had a single death and its serious injury rate is lower than other boats in the Bering Sea Fleet. Hansen’s younger brother, Edgar, serves as Engineer and Deck Boss on the Northwestern and another brother, Norman, often serves as a deck hand.

The Hansen brothers have fishing in their blood. Their father was a Norwegian fisherman who was one of the pioneers of fishing on the Bering Sea. Sig himself learned the ropes starting at age 14 on his dad’s fishing vessel and eventually took over the helm at 24, being one of the youngest captains on the Bering Sea. He is known as a hard-driving captain who pushes himself and his crew to work grueling hours under extreme weather conditions to capture some of the biggest hauls on the fishing fleet.

Sig Hansen, the hard-driving captain of the F/V Northwestern of “Deadliest Catch” fame, will talk about and sign copies of his 336-page memoir, “North by Northwestern: A Seafaring Family on Deadly Alaskan Waters.”

In his book, the Ballard-born Hansen explores his Norwegian family’s fishing heritage (the Hansen brothers inherited the F/V Northwestern from their father, Sverre), his father’s brush with death when his previous boat caught fire and sank in the Bering Sea, the changing ethnicity of the once solidly Norwegian Ballard neighborhood, and the Ballard hangout that’s a favorite of Seattle crab fishermen.

For those who’d like to skål the good Norwegian captain, Leif Erikson Hall will offer a no-host bar, and sodas will be available for those under 21.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Coast Guard rescue crews from Air Station Kodiak have recovered four fishermen at 8:39 p.m. 50 miles south of Montegue Island after the 75-foot Seattle-based fishing vessel Northern Belle sank Tuesday around 5:30 p.m.

Three of the four fishermen were reported to be suffering from hypothermia and a fourth was unresponsive but receiving CPR. It was reported the four fishermen were wearing survival gear when hoisted into the helicopter.

The MH-60 helicopter crew transferred the fishermen to awaiting emergency medical personnel in Cordova for further medical treatment at 9:20 p.m.

Coast Guard Communications Station Kodiak received the distress call on HF-FM radio around 5:30 p.m. from a crewmember reporting four people were on board and they were sinking and abandoning ship. The call was forwarded to the 17th District Command Center in Juneau.

The command center directed Air Station Kodiak to launch a MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter and a HC-130 Hercules aircraft at 5:40 p.m. The Cutter Long Island, which was 40 miles northwest of the Northern Belle, was also diverted to the area and should arrive on scene shortly after 8:30 p.m.

The Northwestern was built by Sverre Hansen, a pioneer in the Alaskan king crab fishery and the father of Sig, Edgar and Norman. The original boat was 108 feet long and specifically designed to harvest king and tanner crabs in the Bering Sea. A few years later, when the king crab catches collapsed, the Northwestern became one of the first boats to fish for opilio crabs. Throughout the 1980′s the Hansens and their boat kept busy fishing during most of the year by following the various crab populations’ seasonal patterns. Twice since then the Northwestern has been lengthened to pack more crab and carry more pots. The boat is currently 127 feet long with 250 pots for a capacity of 251,000 lbs of king crab. Sig Hansen admits this: He doesn’t read a lot of books. And the idea of doing one himself sounded like more trouble than this “Deadliest Catch” skipper could tolerate, even though people around him had been suggesting it for years. But once a publicist connected Hansen, who lives in Shoreline, with Montana-based outdoor writer Mark Sundeen, things fell into place.
